Generational Knowledge Transfer
Generational Knowledge Transfer
One of the latest challenges to emerge in efforts to leverage the collective knowledge of our employees, partners, suppliers and customers is to do this in a workforce that spans 4 generations of workers. From 2007 to 2008, we led one of the first multi-company research working groups on Multi-Generational Knowledge Transfer sponsored by The Conference Board that resulted in a practical guide for selecting knowledge transfer methods to use in work situations. In addition to discovering that each generation has learning preferences that ultimately impact the transfer of knowledge, we found ways to adapt proven KM techniques to account for these preferences.
The bottom line: We believe the challenge of multiple generations in the workplace is so important we are leading a new working group of companies in researching Knowledge Transfer in a Digital World. This effort is focused on application of social media to facilitate the transfer knowledge across generations and geographies of workers.
